Charleston County Council Chairman Joe Boykin has released the following statement regarding the successful 2026 Transportation Sales Tax referendum, which passed with nearly 64 percent voter approval:
“Yesterday, Charleston County voters reaffirmed their commitment to safer roads, less congestion, responsible growth, and protecting the quality of life that makes our community special.
“For more than two decades, the Transportation Sales Tax has helped us improve roads, expand public transit, and preserve tens of thousands of acres of greenspace. By extending the existing half-cent, we can continue that progress for generations to come.
“The 2026 program was shaped by extensive public input, including nearly 80 meetings, 29,000 comments, and more than 600 project requests. I'm grateful to our residents for their engagement, our municipal leaders for their partnership, and the voters for placing their trust in us.
“The responsibility now is to deliver on that trust with a continued commitment to the transparency, accountability, and results that Charleston County residents deserve.”
