$30K PowerUp Competition Kicks Off With First Three Finalists

Apr 25, 2023 12:39PM ● By Donna Isbell Walker

Integrated Media Publishing and Erik Weir kick off their inaugural $30K PowerUp Competition this month with profiles of the first three South Carolina-based businesses that will have a chance to win a cash infusion into their company.

For the next six months, three contestants will be profiled in each issue of Greenville Business Magazine, Columbia Business Monthly, and Charleston Business Magazine for a chance to win $15,000 for first place, $10,000 for second place, and $5,000 for third place.

Seasons Fruits and Veggies LLC, CoffeeCandy, and Waffle Drop are profiled in this issue.

Weir, an author and entrepreneur, is a sponsor of the contest.

“During Covid I saw how many people suffered from depression, separation anxiety, and fear,” Weir said. “The commonality among the individuals who I saw prosper were those who saw opportunity instead of reason for fear. That opportunity was often self-created and was born in the entrepreneurial spirit. A large part of US jobs, more than half, are small businesses with many being sole proprietors.

“Entrepreneurs are the backbone of economic growth for South Carolina and the US. One of the key drivers of South Carolina’s growth is the vibrant business climate that fosters and encourages start-ups. I developed the $30,000 PowerUp to encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs and to provide incentive to those on the sidelines to dream big and start a business.”

The 21 finalists (three businesses featured in each issue between April and October) will be evaluated by a panel of outside judges who, along with social media votes, will choose the top three businesses. The winners will be announced in October.

“South Carolina has always had a vibrant business community, but it’s especially exciting to see the number of entrepreneurs who have launched their own businesses in recent years,” said Publisher Lori Coon. “We’re proud to partner with Erik Weir for this opportunity to spotlight and support startup companies.”
