Charleston Mayor William S. Cogswell Jr. announced at this week's State of Our City: Johns Island event that the city has begun drafting an ordinance that would expand the traffic analysis required of developers through the Technical Review Committee (TRC) process.
Under the proposed ordinance, developers would be required to show how a project affects the immediate surrounding road network, not just its own entrances and exits. The city previously rewrote its stormwater regulations to be the strictest in the state and is now taking the same approach to traffic. The ordinance will go through the city’s standard public process, including review and a vote by City Council.
“Growth on Johns Island didn’t happen overnight, and there’s no simple solution,” said Cogswell. “What I can promise is that when we approve these changes every new project will be held to a higher standard. Developers will have to look beyond their own driveway and show how a project affects the whole area. ”
The announcement came during the Johns Island stop of State of Our City, a five-part community series this fall in which Cogswell and Charleston City Councilmembers are sharing what’s underway, what’s finished, and what’s ahead in each part of the city. Johns Island was the second stop in the series; upcoming stops include Daniel Island & Cainhoy, James Island, and the Peninsula.
