Avocet Hospitality Group

Charleston

Age 29

Growing up in Summerville, riding horses, participating in the arts, and beginning my hospitality career at a young age taught me the value of discipline, connection, and creating meaningful experiences for others. While earning my bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in women’s and gender studies at the College of Charleston, including two study abroad programs focused on intercultural communication, I discovered a passion for bringing people together, embracing diverse perspectives, and fostering inclusive environments. That passion led me to human resources in the hospitality industry, where I have spent the past seven years with Avocet Hospitality. During that time, I have been promoted three times, taking on increasing responsibility in shaping employee experiences and strengthening workplace culture. I have earned my SHRM-CP, Diversity Leadership, and DISC Behavioral Consultant certifications and developed training on topics such as cross-cultural communication, unconscious bias, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. My long-term goal is to create workplaces and communities where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. Giving back means empowering others through education, advocating for their success, mentoring future leaders, and using my skills to create environments where people can thrive.

Favorite Quote and Why: “The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit.” (Author unknown; often attributed to Fabienne Fredrickson.) This quote reminds me to be patient, stay consistent, and trust the process. Success rarely happens overnight; there is a great deal of effort, persistence, and growth that takes place before you ever see the results. It’s a reminder that every day matters and that each small step brings you closer to where you want to be.

Definition of a Successful Leader: I believe successful leadership is measured by the ability to bring out the best in others through empathy, integrity, and intentionality. A successful leader creates an environment where people feel valued, safe, understood, and empowered to succeed. They recognize that every person is unique and adapt their approach to meet individual needs, celebrate strengths, and understand the experiences that shape each person they lead. They listen, advocate, embrace diverse perspectives, and genuinely want to see you reach your highest potential. Ultimately, the true measure of a successful leader is not what you accomplish alone, but the culture you create, the trust you build, the confidence you inspire, and the growth you encourage in those around you

Advice to 18-Year-Old Self: Embrace uncertainty, stay curious, and confidently pursue what inspires you. You never know how a conversation, relationship, or opportunity may shape your future, so be intentional about building meaningful connections with the people you meet. Everyone has a story, perspective, or lesson to share, and the relationships you build can open doors you never expected. Do not let fear or self-doubt prevent you from taking risks. Trust your instincts, but remember that some of the greatest growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Give yourself permission to explore new paths and evolve, but also give opportunities the time and commitment they deserve. Do not walk away simply because something becomes challenging. Challenges are often where the most valuable lessons are found, and success rarely comes without discomfort. There is no single path you are required to follow, and you can reinvent yourself as many times as you want! Advocate for yourself, recognize the value you bring to the table, and never stop learning. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and encourage you to become the best version of yourself.
